Go Diego Cake

I was recently asked to create a "Go Diego Go" birthday cake for a little boy. At first I wanted to create a bust of Diego but soon realized that my cake making skills were not up to that challenge just yet. So I set off to make a jungle themed cake.

Step One: Create Diego

Something I learned through this process is that people are hard. Yes, creating a figure out of gum paste is extremely hard. I am not a sculpture, or an artist how the hell am I going to do this? So here is my first attempt. Please keep your laughter to a minimum, for it will hurt my feelings:

Okay, so first off he has no hair, or clothes, but its okay for my first attempt...don't you think?!?!?

I can not expect someone to PAY me for this "Diego" so here is my second attempt:

I really think I am improving! What do you think? He actually has clothes this time, and he has hair. On the other hand if you look closely at his arms, it looks as if he was amputated. I didn't even attempt to make hands! His feet looked more like hoofs, but I do not have a picture of that.

Here is my third (and final) attempt:

That will have to do cause I am tired of this!

My plan for the cake was to make a square cake and on the top have Diego and his friend (a baby jaguar) next to him with a river running through the cake. On the sides of the cake would be flat animals and trees, sounds cute right.

LOOK! you can see the hoof like feet of Diego!

I actually like the baby jaguar! Animals seem to be easier than humans.

So I found pictures online of Diego and some animal friends and I cut them out and traced them and here is what I created.

This one is my favorite.

Then it was time to assemble my animal buddies onto the cake...and I did not like the final look.

So my Mommy had a brilliant idea! she said to take the trees I made for the side and just stick them into the top of the cake to create a bush (thanks Mommy!). While it did not turn out the way I wanted to it is still okay. I forgot to take a picture with Diego in but he went right next to his friend (where the toothpick is).
